Web Design Oklahoma City – Like much of the region, before the development of Oklahoma City, native Indian tribes called this region home. The city itself was officially settled in April of 1889. Up until this point it was known as the Unassigned Lands, allowing settlers to come in and claim land. However, during this period Oklahoma was not an official member of the United States. The state did not join the Union until 1907. Soon after the state became a part of the U.S., the state capital moved from Guthrie to Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City grew quickly. Route 66 cut through it, which not only offered a stopover to West Coast travelers but also an opportunity to settle for those who were looking for work. Plus, the discovery of oil in 1928 turned Oklahoma into one of the major oil production centers of the country.

While other cities along Route 66 were significantly hampered during the construction of the new national Interstate system, Highways I-35, I-44, and I-40 all connected in Oklahoma City, which helped continue the growth the city experienced after its founding.

The city population has continued to grow as well. In 1900 it had an estimated population of around 10,000 residents. Now, the estimated 2017 population is nearly 645,000. It is the country’s 41st largest metro area.

Where We Are Now

Oklahoma City is the largest city in the state of Oklahoma, and its population continues to grow, as it is expected to push closer to one million residents. Much like cities throughout Texas, Oklahoma City has seen a growth in individuals moving in from the Northeast and Midwest looking for job opportunities.

The three Interstates continue to make Oklahoma City a vital roadway transportation hub, both for the shipment of goods within the United States and for products moving south to Mexico (and north out of Mexico). Regarding air transportation, both the Will Rogers World Airport and the Wiley Post Airport call the city home. For public transportation options, Amtrak has a station in Oklahoma City, which connects with the Dallas/Fort Worth station. There is also the Embark, which is the city bus line. Oklahoma City Streetcar system is currently under construction and looks to expand around the downtown area of the city.

• Landmarks

There is no shortage of available landmarks and activities to take in. So, whether you’re just moving to Oklahoma City or you’ve called it home for some time, there’s plenty to see and do. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is one of the finest examples of regional art in the country. There is also the Civic Center Music Hall, which features a beautiful art deco design and has been entertaining audiences since 2001. The Oklahoma City Opera and Oklahoma City Ballet also call the music hall home.

There are a handful of other theatres spread throughout the city. Some of these theatres include the Kirkpatric Auditorium, Lyric Theatre, Jewel Box Theatre, Oklahoma City Community College Bruce Owen Theater, and the Petree Recital Hall (found on the Oklahoma City University campus).

• Major Attractions

If you’re a fan of sports, you’re going to love Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder is an NBA team, so if you like your professional basketball this is a must visit. If baseball is more your thing, you need to check out the Oklahoma City Dodgers, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This gives you an excellent opportunity to see young professionals just before they hit the majors and even big-name pros who are rehabbing before returning to the Majors.

The city is also home to the Energy FC, which is a United Soccer League team. Plus, there is the Blazers, which is a member of the Central Hockey League.

• Businesses and Economy

There are some major corporations and businesses that call Oklahoma City home. The top employer for the city though is the State of Oklahoma. As the state government is based out of the city, it is by far the largest employer with over 40,000 jobs. The United States Federal Aviation Administration is also a top employer. Other non-federal or state employers in the city include Integris Health, Mercy Health, and Chesapeake Energy Corporation. Hobby Lobby also calls the city home.
